New WEEE law in Switzerland 2022

We already informed about the new WEEE law in Switzerland in our October newsletter in 2021. The new WEEE law (VREG) came into force 2022. The VREG is the law on the return, take-back and disposal of electrical and electronic equipment.

A main change is the extension of the scope of the WEEE law. From 2022 all types of electrical and electronic equipment are included in the WEEE Scope. This includes in particular electrical equipment such as medical devices, monitoring and control instruments, automatic dispensers photovoltaic modules etc. that were not in scope until now.

Basically recycling in Switzerland is organised by take back systems like SENS eRecycling for household appliances or SWICO for IT equipment. The vRG partners finance a nationwide take-back system with their recycling fees (vRG).

Furthermore there is a new take-back obligation for all distributors and online sellers of WEEE included in the new WEEE law.

For the first time, online sellers are mentioned in the WEEE law and are defined as manufacturers. This means that direct sellers (including from abroad) have to offer a take-back solution for their WEEE products.

If your company is affected by these changes, you can contact the Go4Recycling team at any time.
