Over the past months, we have informed you several times about the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the associated requirements. As the date of application approaches, we would like to highlight one specific topic in this newsletter: the obligation for producer identification.
From 12 August 2026 on, packaging must clearly identify the responsible company. In many cases, this is the company that first places the packaging on the EU market. However, the specific allocation of responsibility should always be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
What information is required?
Based on the current regulatory requirements, the following information is particularly relevant:
- Name of the company or economic operator
- Postal address
- Electronic contact details
- Batch, serial, or other identification number enabling traceability
The required information may be provided, for example, through packaging print, labels, inkjet marking, or a QR code.
Legal Background
The producer identification requirements are set out in the PPWR (Regulation (EU) 2025/40), in particular Article 15(5)–(7).
The full text of the regulation can be found in the Official Journal of the European Union:
Regulation – EU – 2025/40 – EN – PPWR – EUR-Lex
Further information on the definition of a producer is also available from the German Central Packaging Register Foundation (Stiftung Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister):

Check your status quo
We recommend discussing this topic with your packaging supplier at an early stage to ensure that all necessary adjustments can be implemented in time.
