Charging stations for electric cars in WEEE Scope

Electric cars are omnipresent at the moment. Due to the massive increase in electric cars being sold in Europe the number of charging points is also rising steadily. According to the German Federal Statistical Office there are currently more than 16,500 “filling stations” for electric cars in Germany.

The WEEE authority in Germany- Stiftung EAR- has recently published information that all charging stations for e-mobility (standalone charging stations as well as charging stations attached to walls) fall within the scope of the German WEEE law.

Charging stations are mostly classified as large appliances due to their height.

Permanently fixed charging cables are part of the entire charging station. Mobile charging cables must be registered separately.

In many EU countries charging stations also fall under the scope of national WEEE legislations.
