As previously reported in our newsletters, the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will gradually introduce changes to packaging labelling requirements over the coming years. One important change will already take effect on 12 February 2027: From this date, the “Green Dot” may no longer be displayed in its current visible form on packaging as an indication of participation in an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme.
If the corresponding information is still to be provided on the packaging, it may in future be made available digitally via a QR code or another standardised and open digital marking technology.
Further requirements will follow from 12 August 2028. Packaging will then generally be required to carry harmonised EU-wide material labelling, for example for plastic, aluminium, paper/cardboard or glass. Instructions for correct waste separation will also become more harmonised across the EU.
At the same time, digital labelling will become increasingly important. Certain information, such as recycled content, relevant substances or return options for reusable packaging, may in future be provided via digital data carriers such as QR codes.
As some technical details and the specific design of the labelling requirements are still to be defined at EU level, companies should continue to monitor further developments.
