At the beginning of November, the German government approved the first draft of the BattDG without further discussion or amendments. This new legislation is designed to implement EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542, which has been in effect across all EU member states since February 18, 2024. The new law will replace the existing German Battery law (BattG) as of August 18, 2025, while both regulations will remain in effect in parallel until that date.
In the next step German government will review the new regulatory framework, particularly through the relevant committees. Since the new Battery Regulation provides much more detailed rules than the previous EU Battery Directive, no major deviations are expected in Germany or other EU countries.
Further details regarding the implementation and timeline are still pending.
