The Danish EPR registry (DPA) announced that on January 1st, 2025 the Extended Producer Responsibility for Single-Use Plastic Products will take effect.
The purpose of the upcoming producer responsibility is to reduce the amount of single-use plastic that ends up in nature and harms the marine environment.
Studies have shown that plastic makes up between 80 and 85% of all waste on beaches, with single-use plastic products accounting for around 50% of this. Therefore, the Extended Producer Responsibility for Single-Use Plastic Products focuses particularly on collecting products that are frequently found on beaches and shorelines.
At the same time, there is an ambition to promote the use of reusable and recyclable products, allowing them to become part of a circular economy instead of ending up as waste after a single use.
If your company is the first to manufacture, import, and/or sell single-use plastic products in Denmark, you are responsible for these products.
The Extended Producer Responsibility for Single-Use Plastic Products includes products from 8 different categories, provided they contain plastic.
- Food containers
- Beverage containers
- Drinking cups
- Packaging bags and films
- Lightweight plastic carrier bags
- Wet wipes
- Balloons
- Filters for tobacco products
There is no threshold or minimum amount of plastic that these product categories must contain to fall under the Extended Producer Responsibility for Single-Use Plastic Products.
This means that it doesn’t matter if the product is primarily made of plastic or another material – even a small amount of plastic can mean that the producer responsibility applies.
If you are already a producer, you must register. This can be done from December 1st, 2024, through December 17th, 2024.
New producers must register no later than 14 days before they begin selling or distributing single-use plastic products.
