Packaging Spain – Symbols on packaging

The new extended producer responsibility (EPR) scheme for packaging in Spain – Ecotic Envases – informed that marking on packaging is voluntarily at the moment.

The Royal Decree on packaging states in Article 13 – Marking obligations:

  1. Without prejudice to the norms on labeling and marking established in other specific dispositions, the packages will be able to be marked to indicate the material of which it is composed, in accordance with the abbreviations or numbers regulated in the Decision 97/129/CE, of the Commission, of January 28, 1997 by which the system of identification of packaging materials is established in accordance with the Directive 94/62/CE of the European Parliament and of the Council, relative to the packages and waste of packages.

This marking shall be voluntary as long as it is not established otherwise in the European Union regulations.

Nevertheless it is possible to mark packaging and use already existing – voluntary – symbols by for example Ecoembes. At this moment there are no infographics or pictograms that are used by all the scraps uniquely.

Example infographics and further info on markings can be obtained upon request from Go4Recycling.

If you have any questions on packaging, WEEE or battery compliance in Spain please do not hesitate to contact the Go4Recycling team.
